City overview
Athens is an Attic-basin capital where the Acropolis rises above Syntagma, Plaka, Monastiraki, and Piraeus ferry traffic. Ancient marble, 19th-century neoclassical blocks, 2004 Olympic infrastructure, and graffiti-lined Psirri streets sit between Mount Lycabettus, Mount Hymettus, and the Saronic Gulf.
Food & drink
Athens eating means souvlaki, gyros, moussaka, spanakopita, dakos, grilled octopus, loukoumades, and meze with ouzo or tsipouro. Varvakios Agora, Evripidou spice shops, Psirri mezedopolia, Koukaki bakeries, and Plaka tavernas give a better first route than a single restaurant street.

Plaka is the old-town slope under the Acropolis, with Roman Agora lanes, neoclassical houses, tavernas, and the Cycladic-style Anafiotika alley cluster below the rock.
2Monastiraki and Psirri
Monastiraki and Psirri are market-and-nightlife Athens, with the flea market, Avissinia Square, Agii Anargiri, rooftop Acropolis views, mezedopolia, and street art packed between metro stops.
3Syntagma and Kolonaki
Syntagma and Kolonaki feel official and polished, anchored by Parliament, Grande Bretagne, Voukourestiou shopping, museums, embassies, and Lycabettus paths.
4Exarchia
Exarchia is bookshops, student bars, murals, anarchist history, Strefi Hill, and the National Archaeological Museum rather than postcard Athens.
5Koukaki and Makrygianni
Koukaki and Makrygianni are practical Acropolis bases, with Dionysiou Areopagitou, the Acropolis Museum, Syngrou-Fix metro, bakeries, and quieter apartment streets.
6Piraeus
Piraeus is the port city, with island ferries, cruise terminals, Mikrolimano seafood, metro Line 1, and long walks from some ship berths to the station.
Getting around
OASA tickets cover metro, tram, trolleybus, and bus routes, with a base urban ticket valid for 90 minutes and metro Line 3 running to Athens International Airport. Metro Lines 1, 2, and 3 are fastest for Piraeus, Monastiraki, Syntagma, Acropolis-area stations, and the airport, while walking works best inside Plaka and the archaeological promenade.

City overview
Thessaloniki sits on the Thermaic Gulf, where Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Jewish, and modern Greek layers line a long waterfront. The first-time frame is the seafront and Aristotelous Square for orientation, Ano Poli and the walls for older neighborhoods, and the Rotunda-Galerius axis for the city Roman and Byzantine core.
Food & drink
Thessaloniki food is rich in bakery and street-counter detail: bougatsa, koulouri, trigona Panoramatos, soutzoukakia, gyros, meze, seafood, and syrup pastries. Modiano Market, Kapani Market, Ladadika tavernas, and waterfront cafes give the best first food route.

Neighborhoods
1Waterfront and Nea Paralia
The seafront is open and social, with the White Tower, long promenade, public art, evening cyclists, cafes, and views toward Mount Olympus on clear days.
2Aristotelous, Tsimiski, and the center
The central grid is busy and commercial, with Aristotelous Square, Tsimiski shops, Modiano Market, Kapani Market, offices, hotels, and late cafes.
3Ano Poli
The Upper Town keeps older lanes, small houses, wall viewpoints, Byzantine churches, tavernas, and a slower slope-side rhythm above the center.
4Rotunda, Navarinou, and Galerius
This student-heavy district mixes Roman monuments, university streets, cheap food, bars, bookstores, and everyday movement around Egnatia Street.
5Ladadika and the port
Ladadika is the warehouse-and-nightlife quarter near the port, with restaurants, bars, Ottoman-era streets, and easy walks back to Aristotelous Square.
6Kalamaria
Kalamaria is the southeastern seaside district, known for marina walks, seafood, apartment streets, and a residential break from the central grid.
Getting around
The 13-station driverless metro line connects the New Railway Station, Venizelou, Agia Sofia, university stops, and Nea Elvetia, while OASTH buses still cover Ano Poli, Kalamaria, the airport, and beaches. The waterfront and central monument belt are walkable, but Ano Poli climbs are steep enough to justify a bus or taxi.
