About Yerevan
City overview
Yerevan is older than Rome (Erebuni fortress, 782 BC) yet built almost entirely of rosy volcanic tufa in the 1920s — a pink city of café-packed boulevards radiating from Republic Square, with snow-capped Mount Ararat filling the southern horizon. The Cascade's giant stairway doubles as a contemporary-art museum, and the world's oldest winemaking culture is pouring again all over Saryan Street.
Food & drink
Khorovats smoke and fresh lavash (UNESCO-listed, baked slapped to a tonir wall) anchor the table, with dolma, harissa porridge, and apricots everywhere in season. Sherep and Lavash run the polished new-Armenian rooms; Saryan Street pours Areni reds and 6,100-year-old-tradition wines by the glass; Ararat brandy tours finish the evening.
Top sights
- 1
The Matenadaran
indoorThe fortress-like repository of 23,000 Armenian manuscripts — illuminated gospels, medieval medicine, and maps going back to the invention of the alphabet in 405 AD. The guided tour earns its hour.
- 2
Vernissage market and the GUM food market
mixedWeekend Vernissage spreads carpets, obsidian, and Soviet brass across two park blocks; the GUM market's dried-fruit garlands and basturma counters run daily.
- 3
Sergei Parajanov Museum
indoorThe house-museum of cinema's great collagist — assemblages, costumes, and letters from a career spent out-imagining Soviet censorship. Small, dense, unforgettable.

Neighborhoods
1Kentron
The central district holding nearly everything — Republic Square, the Cascade, Saryan Street's wine bars, and the Opera's park cafés.
2Kond
The last 17th-century quarter — crumbling lanes turned open-air mural gallery on the hill behind Saryan Street.
3Nor Arabkir - 1
The plateau north of the gorge — university streets, local bakeries, and the Hrazdan gorge walks below.
Day trips
40km / 1h by car
Garni Temple and Geghard Monastery
The only standing Greco-Roman temple in the former USSR above the Azat gorge's basalt organ-pipes, paired with the UNESCO monastery carved whole out of the cliff.
45km / 1h by car
Khor Virap and the Ararat plain
The monastery where Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned — and the closest, most staggering view of Mount Ararat across the border plain.
Getting around
Kentron walks end to end in half an hour; the one-line metro and cheap GG/Yandex rides cover the rest. Day trips run by marshrutka from the Gai station or by half-day taxi hire.
